About the Author
S'ken Evans is a father, husband, a clergyman and educator. From the parental role: Evans wrote this story to highlight the fact that many children his son's age face similar obstacles when it comes to the first day of school. Evans realizes that it's important for fathers and parents to recognize these possible conditions and take action to encourage and instill confidence in their children, all while building character.
From an educator's perspective, Evans chose to write this story with language that is not explicitly taught. His word choices were intentional as they bring sound and meaning to the action of an object or behavior. These types of words help bring meaning to the sound they make. For instance, "the author adds extra emphasis on the balloon until it exploded boom." Boom, emphasized the word exploded which helped the child understand context. With new research on the Science of Reading, focusing on onomatopoeia words are the highest leverage for children learning how to read.
Tru's First Day is an awesome back-to-school gift for those gearing up for their big day. It is perfect whether they are worried about not knowing the rules, how to make friends, or how to fit in. Additionally, this book is perfect for elementary students grades 3-5.

The illustrations in this story draw upon both real-life photo references and fun caricature and cartooning styles. Our goal was to evoke the style of a coloring book, as if a child has colored in the drawings with crayon or colored pencil. That's why the outlines are relatively sold while the coloring is done in a deliberately free hand, sketchy style.
This story envisions Tru as a child with an active imagination, like most children his age, Various things in his life are highly exaggerated and personified, like the alarm clock and the book bag, alongside his many day dreams. Our illustrator enjoys visual storytelling, and we desired to convey an image as clearly as possible to our future young readers with as few words as possible.
The superhero imagery came from the main idea that superheroes communicate confidence and boundless imagination so easily to many audiences. Things in the story are potrayed in a consistently bright and colorful way, as they should be. Feeling like superheroes - and knowing they have the loving support of friends and family - helps children like Tru to overcome their fears and build faith and confidence in themselves.
